Most people may think farm animals only need food, water, exercise and clean shelter. But we believe essential oils should be added to the list of must have’s as they can benefit a ton from using them as can you as the owner or farmer!

General guidelines for using essential oils for farm animals:

● Always dilute with a carrier oil. We recommend Fractionated Coconut Oil.

For very large farm animals, like horses and cattle, it is recommended to start with 10 drops. Unless otherwise indicated on the product label, dilution is unnecessary.

For hoofed animals, it is recommended to topically apply oils to the spine or flanks.

● Rub oils onto your own hands and then stroke the animal’s fur. For large or hard-to-reach areas, combine essential oils with a carrier oil or water in a spray bottle for easier application.

Essential oils can be taken internally. Some essential oils can be mixed with your animal’s food.

For large animals, you can pull out the bottom lip and drop oils directly into the mouth.

● Never put oils in eyes or ears!

● Heavily dilute or avoid using “hot oils” on farm animals’ skin. Examples are Peppermint or Oregano which can burn their skin.

Horses, despite their size they can be sensitive. Use the same dosage for horses as for an adult human. And less for pregnant mares and ponies, etc. The oils do not build up in the system like drugs do so reapply as needed.

Essential oils with dairy cattle are now being considered as a way to improve or alter rumen fermentation (the cow’s first stomach) in order to reduce methane gas production. Worms and parasites are the number one issue on any farm and essential oils are being used successfully by many to combat this serious threat.

Essential oil for chickens

Chickens breathe differently than mammals. They do not have a diaphragm and use the rib cage and breastbone to move the air in and out of the body. Their lung relies on air sacs to distributed oxygen to their bodies. As a result, chickens breathe in higher concentrations of oxygen and whatever else it is the air.

Here are a few oils you can use to care for your chickens:

Citrus oils especially Lemon for cleaning their coop and to promote clear breathing

Lavender, Melaleuca, and Frankincense for wounds

Oregano is used from wound care to intestinal worms, to a replacement for routine antibiotics in flock health care and prevention.

Marjoram added to the water of broiler chicks is a great natural way to enhance their immunity and promote growth.

Adding Thyme, Eucalyptus, and Oregano to their water is a great way to ensure that their eggs are safe! Add a drop of each in each gallon of water.

Make Sure It’s The Good Stuff

Always use the very best quality essential oils you can find. As a general rule of thumb, the more complex the fragrance the more aromatic compounds the oil will contain. You can literally smell the difference! We only recommend doTERRA essential oils, because we trust them.  TERRA’s oils are tested by batch and are so pure that you can use them topically on cats sporadically in a highly diluted form.
