How to Use Essential Oils Safely With Children

One of the most frequently asked questions we receive is “How Do I Use Essential Oils Safely With My Children”. Essential oils and kids are a wonderful combination. Today, we will help you to navigate how to use essential oils with your children as we know for many it can seem like a scary space.

Certified Therapeutic Grade (CPTG) essential oils, that have been certified pure, are considered safe and effective for babies and children. When applying to children you will need to dilute the oils because of the sensitive nature of their skin. A good ratio to start with is 1-2 drops of oil with 2 TBSP of fractionated coconut oil. Just a few drops of this diluted mixture will be enough.

Children, especially infants and babies, react more strongly to things than adults do, so more caution is needed when using any type of medicine {and remember essential oils are plant medicines}.

Remember these simple rules:

  • Introduce one essential oil at a time.
  • Watch for allergic reactions.
  • Do not use oils on babies less than 3 months old.
  • Essential oils should not be used internally on children.

Kids’ skin is more sensitive than adult skin. Even though most oils tend to be non-irritating on the skin (especially on the bottom of the feet, where the skin is thickest).

It’s a great idea to dilute your essential oils in a good carrier oil before applying to children. You still get all the same benefits of using the essential oil neat aka without a carrier oil. dōTERRA’s range of Touch products are great because they are already pre-diluted and ready to go.

DIFFUSE OILS WITH YOUR CHILDREN

Using your oils aromatically is a great way for your children to experience the benefits of essential oils safely. Diffusers in the common areas of the house are great for helping the whole family to fight off any bugs or flu and promoting a happy, energized or relaxed space. It is also completely safe to use a diffuser in your children’s room. Lavender, Balance, Serenity and Breathe are common favorites amongst Ora leader families.

USING CITRUS OILS SAFELY

Kids love the smell of citrus oils. There’s something about them where it feels like it’s sunshine in a bottle! Many families diffuse citrus oils regularly because they are so uplifting and energizing. They really help to get the kids out of bed and are also a great support when homework needs to get done. Be careful using citrus oils topically as they are photosensitive i.e. please avoid sun exposure after applying citrus oils topically!
