Forget everything bad you’ve been told about using essential oils for your beloved feline friends! If you are worried about using essential oils around your cats or are curious about the benefits of essential oils for your four-legged friends, here is a simple guide that can help answer your questions.

 

Please Be Careful and Mindful:

Use extra special care when using essential oils with cats as they are very sensitive little beings (far more than dogs). Here are some things to keep in mind when using essential oils with your cats:

● Always dilute the essential oils. Treat cats like they are a newborn baby and always remember that less is more. It is better to reapply when needed than overdose.

 

 

● The recommended dilution for full sized cats is 1 drop of essential oil to 2 tbsp of carrier oil. For kittens, just 1 drop of essential oil to 4 tbsp carrier oil. Then use 1-2 sprays or 1-2 drops of diluted oil per application.

● Never leave a cat in a closed room with a diffuser on and allow your cats to freely leave the space if they are finding the smell too much. 

● It is always a good idea to diffuse at half your usual strength. Don’t forget a cat’s sense of smell is much keener than humans and even dogs.

 

 

● Avoid oils high in phenols and eugenols for direct application (topical or internal) such as, Basil, Birch, Cinnamon, Clove, Fennel, Melaleuca, Oregano, Peppermint, Thyme, and Wintergreen as well as oils high in d-limonene which includes all Citrus oils (Bergamot, Grapefruit, Lemon, Lime, Tangerine and Wild Orange). Essential oils with high levels of these constituents may overwhelm a cat’s liver’s ability to metabolize and eliminate them.

● It’s not a good idea to use oils topically or internally on your cat every single day.

● Don’t put oils directly in eyes, ears, nose or any other sensitive areas.

● When oiling your cat, please make sure they are well hydrated. The oils are detoxifying and if they aren’t properly hydrated the toxins will just sit in their system with no way out. The toxins will just sit in their system with no way out if they aren’t properly hydrated. If they are severely sick, they may need IV fluids from your vet.

 

 

● If you are treating a wound, remove all the hair with clippers (not scissors) from around the wound. This allows the wound to heal faster. Keep your cat from licking the wound by using a sock, t-shirt, shorts, bandage, or e-collar when necessary.

• Cedarwood: Helps repel pests and promote healthy skin and coat
• Chamomile: Promotes relaxation and sleep and also support healthy digestion
• Lavender: Relieves anxiety from separation or during long trips
• Myrrh: Can help fight allergies and promote healthy skin and coat
• Clary Sage: Calms nervousness and excitability
• Geranium: Great for repelling pests and as a treatment for ear infections
• Ginger: Relieves pain from arthritis and hip dysplasia and supports healthy digestion
• Helichrysum: Used topically can help with pain relief and skin issues
• Marjoram: Repels pests and helps treat skin infections and irritations

 

Make Sure It’s The Good Stuff

Always use the very best quality essential oils you can find. As a general rule of thumb, the more complex the fragrance the more aromatic compounds the oil will contain. You can literally smell the difference! AROMATIC

• Diffuse
• Apply to your hand and hold up the nose (never put directly on their nose)
• Apply to a bandana, collar, bed or toys

• Nape of the neck
• Paws (between toes or pads)
• Directly on affected area

• Pinna (hairless portion of ear flap
• Petting (apply 1 drop to hand and pet the cat down or up the back

INTERNAL

• In water bowl
